The Power of Singing at Work: How WTW Used Music to Re-Energise Their Team

Biiah

A World Running on Empty

For many adults, days often blur into one another, filled with long hours, routines, and responsibilities that feel monotonous. Work is no different. We pour time and effort into what we do, and while many genuinely enjoy their jobs, passion isn’t constant.

Beyond the workload, navigating every social interaction and trying to avoid conflict can leave us anxious, stressed, and struggling to focus. Over time, we begin to feel like we are running on empty, burned out and simply trying to get through the day. Recognising and understanding the impact of these pressures on mental health is essential, both for individuals and for the workplaces that rely on them.

And yet, even in the midst of exhaustion, life occasionally offers a spark, a small moment that lifts our spirits, creates a lasting memory, and reminds us why we keep going.

The Power of a Shared Song

Why Sing?

Most songs you hear or sing carry a personal memory, a snapshot of a time, place, or  feeling. It might be the weather that day, a piece of news you’d just heard, or a moment that has blurred with time. You may not remember every detail, but the emotions it stirs remain vivid, familiar, comforting, and sometimes beautifully nostalgic.

Connections, Energy, Memories

Positive associations are essential in life, they motivate us, lift our spirits, and remind us of joy. Singing does exactly that. It fills you with energy, clears your mind, and gives you a moment to simply let go. And it’s even better when someone else shares that moment with you. Singing together amplifies these benefits, creating connections, shared memories, and a genuine sense of belonging.

WTW’s All Hands Session

We often experience the joy and energy of shared music without realising just how much it affects us. Research is now catching up, proving what we’ve always known intuitively: music, connection, and shared creativity can transform wellbeing.

The benefits of singing together aren’t just felt anymore. Together we can observe and measure this impact. WTW joined us to bring this concept to life during their recent All-Hands meeting. Instead of another typical team activity, like a trust fall or mindfulness session, they chose something different: they sang.

Led by Biiah coach Dan Cooper, the one-hour “Team All Hands” workshop brought together 86 of the WTW team. Hierarchy and competition were set aside, replaced by energy, connection, genuine excitement, laughter, and a noticeable boost in confidence as everyone joined in and shared the experience.

The atmosphere in the room captured the essence of what group singing can achieve a genuine sense of belonging.

Voices from the Room: Attendees’ Favourite Parts

The hall echoed with voices, all blending together as colleagues sang, clapped, and laughed. The shared energy was palpable, creating a lively, engaging atmosphere that one attendee captured perfectly:

“The energy in the room. The energy of Dan!”

Many reflected on their favourite moments, from “everyone clapping through the whole song” to the joy of “being part of a team activity where everyone could contribute in their own unique way, no right or wrong.”

These moments of shared joy didn’t just lift the mood; they helped strengthen psychological safety, an essential ingredient for collaboration, creativity, and performance at work.

Measured Impact, Real Connection

WTW’s “Team All Hands” singing workshop delivered more than just a moment of fun, it generated measurable improvements in mood, engagement, and satisfaction. Using Biiah’s mixed-method approach, which combines participant reflections with optional wearable data, the session provided clear evidence of its impact.

The Results at a Glance

  • 86 employees took part
  • +66% improvement in how participants reported feeling after the session
  • 4.6/5 average satisfaction rating
  • Consistent feedback highlighting fun, authenticity, and connection

Why Group Singing Truly Matters

Group singing is one of the most accessible and powerful ways for humans to connect, to themselves and to each other. When we sing together, something remarkable happens: our hearts literally start to beat in sync, our breathing patterns align, and our brains release a cascade of hormones linked to trust, belonging, and joy.

Beyond the science, group singing builds community. It bridges differences, softens isolation, and creates shared moments of meaning. In a world that often feels disconnected, it reminds us that we’re part of something bigger,  that our individual voices matter most when joined with others.

It’s not just art. It’s health, connection, and humanity in harmony.
